    Reception - Summer Term

We continue to use story books to inspire our writing and we are working hard on developing handwriting. It is important that children hold their pencil correctly and are starting and ending letters in the correct place, sitting letters on the line, with ascenders and descenders (those tall and dangly letters) correctly placed.

Finding any opportunities for writing at home is really valuable. Examples of this might be writing the shopping list; what to pack for a weekend away; birthday cards and messages to family members.

    Reading

Children are now in their new phonics groups for this term. Please do continue to encourage their reading at home – reading their book / ditty sheet on multiple occasions each week to increase fluency.

We will continue to read stories to the children every day, to develop a reading for pleasure culture. Please do visit your local library to access a wonderful selection of story books and fact books.

Your child should be bringing home one reading book (with their yellow record book) and one library book (for you to read to them) on Fridays. Please let us know if you do not have a library book at home.

    Maths

This term we will finish looking at composition of numbers to 10 – with addition and subtraction facts as the key focus. We really want to work on rapid fluency in knowing number facts for each of the numbers 5-10. We are also looking at double facts and sharing (early division).

Continuing to play board games at home is a fantastic way to build numeracy skills and jigsaws are a fantastic special awareness tool. Looking out for number patterns when walking and cycling around – spotting 4 cars because there are 2 red and 2 blue or 5 birds because 3 are on the pond, 2 are not – are all great ways to help your child’s fluency.

    PE – physical

We will be working on games using teamwork, score keeping, tagging and ball games across the Summer Terms. We will also look forward to our Sports Day- all family members are invited to this.

The children will continue to work on fine motor skills, particularly with handwriting development over the term.

    Weather

As the weather gets warmer, please make sure you child has a sun hat and bottle containing water every day. They also need a change of clothes in their bag.

    Opportunity to help

As part of our Reception curriculum we are thinking about the question, What do I want to be when I grow up? We are exploring things that interest us and jobs we could do. In the past we have enjoyed some wonderful talks from parents about the jobs they do in our community to help people, such as a vet, doctor, dentist, fire fighter. If you have a job that you would like to talk to the children about, please let us know. It helps to have some props or pictures to bring it to life for the children. We usually try and schedule these with all 60 children just before home time at approximately 2.30/2.40pm.

    Many thanks,

Mrs Buckley, Miss Richards, Mrs Garraghan and Mrs Musto
