Governors

Governors are the strategic leaders of our schools and have a vital role to play in making sure every child gets the best possible education” (The Governors Handbook).

The Role of a School Governor

A School governing body has a strategic role in the development of the school but does not become involved in the day-to-day management issues – that is the role of the Head teacher.

Governing bodies should have a strong focus on three core strategies:

- ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

- holding the Head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils;

- overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

School governors are drawn from different parts of the community such as parents, staff, the Local Authority, the community and other groups. This helps to ensure that the Governing Body has sufficient diversity of views and experience.

The Governing Body meets as a full body 4 times a year.

The following committees meet then report to the full Governing Body.

- The Strategic Leadership

- Personnel Committee

- Finance and Premises Committee

- Teaching and Learning Assessment / Personal Development, Behaviour, Welfare

- Leadership, Management / Outcomes for Pupils

I have a long standing interest in Dunalley as my neighbourhood school and have been a governor for many years. I was one of the first co-opted governors. I am married to Derek who following in my mother’s footsteps volunteers for the school by hearing children read.

I first became acquainted with the school as Cheltenham Children’s Librarian welcoming classes to the library to explore the world of children’s literature and to discover information skills. I then moved on to a responsibility for children’s libraries across the County and oversaw the service to schools. I worked closely with colleagues in the Education Department through project partnerships to enhance the opportunities of children with particular challenges. My degree studies included child psychology and in my early career I worked for the Inner London Education Authority. I hope my knowledge and experience of education and management coupled with my personal experience as a proud grandmother of two granddaughters and two grandsons will make me a useful asset to the Governing Body.

I was for five years a Director of the Centre for the Spoken Word which promoted opportunities to explore the spoken word and drama in schools. I am now a committee member of the Cheltenham Branch of the Workers’ Education Association (WEA) promoting educational opportunities for adults.
